Dear Parents,
I am excited to be teaching 2nd grade this year. I am looking forward to working with you and your child. This letter has information that will help us work together to make sure your child has a successful second grade experience. If you ever have any questions throughout the year, feel free to write me a note (and put it in the homework folder), or call.
Phone: 541-744-6391 (call after 3:00)
If you have e-mail, that is the best way to contact me: e-mail: [email protected]
Here is some important information:
Homework Folder: Your child will bring home this folder every night (and bring it back to school every day). All notes from school will come home in this folder.
1. 15 minutes of READING: Stapled inside the folder is the daily reading sheet (You must sign the sheet every day) In Second grade, your child needs to read 15 minutes (or more) every day! You should read with your child during this time and help them with difficult words and ask them questions about the story. You can read books that you have at home or library books. After you read, please write the name of the book on the sheet stapled inside of the Homework folder and sign your name.
2. Additional Reading Homework: In the next few weeks, some students will have additional Reading homework (from reading group).
3. Math homework (every day Monday – Thursday) These homework assignments need to be done (corrected by an adult) and returned the next day. Help your child set time aside to do homework every day.
Communication From School: Important notes from school will come home in the Homework Folder. I will also send home a weekly newsletter on Friday. When you receive this newsletter, please read it with your child and have your child fill in the blanks. Sign it and return it to school on Monday (this earns your child another homework star). I will save these newsletters and send them home at the end of the year.
Cooperation (sharing). Your child can bring something small (no electronics or violent toys) to share on Friday. In the afternoon, we will have sharing and then we will have time to play with the items together. If it is an early release day, we will not have sharing.
Volunteers: I really need some volunteers to help with Math this year. I may also need help supervising independant Reading group work and Art. I also need help with classroom preparation (after school once a week); and I need adults to come on fieldtrips. If you can help with any of these things, please fill out the optional volunteer form and send it in your child’s Homework Folder. I will contact you as I need help throughout the year.
Thank you for your time. Together, we can help your child succeed. I look forward to a great year.
Sincerely,
Mr. Ripley
